Small EVs make perfect sense if you do a lot of driving in town and need a simple and cheap-to-run car. But, which ones are the best on the used market?

Small EVs are great alternatives if you’re looking at a cheap-to-run car or do a lot of journeys around town.

Their compact dimensions, smooth powertrains and funky styling make them a great choice in comparison with combustion-powered offerings.

And now, there has never been so much choice on the second-hand market, with several models available at Cazoo.

The cars on this list are good to drive, efficient, provide claimed electric ranges of more than 100 miles and can be picked up at affordable prices.

We’ve compiled a list of the best small electric vehicles on the used market today.




BMW i3

The i3 first came to market in 2013, and it created a stir in the automotive world for its futuristic design and carbon fibre passenger compartment.

The i3 features rear-opening back doors and a bubble-shaped exterior design to make it more aerodynamic.

Underneath, there is the option of a 42kWh battery pack with an electric motor to deliver a claimed 223 miles on a single charge, while there is also a sportier ‘S’ model which boasts larger wheels, sports suspension and a beefier 181bhp electric motor, which provides a claimed 214 miles between trips to the plug.

Look to spend around £11,995 for a standard 42kWh car with 40,000 miles, and £13,895 for a low-mileage S model.

Fiat 500e

The Fiat 500e offers lots of style, with an electric powertrain and ultra-low running costs.

It’s available with a choice of 24kWh and 42kWh battery options, which deliver claimed electric ranges of 118 miles and 199 miles, respectively.

The 500e comes with lots of standard kit for the money, while the bigger battery car is compatible with 85kW DC rapid-charging, allowing for a 15 to 80 per cent top-up to take 30 minutes.

Used models start at £9,700 for a 24kWh car with 15,000 miles, while 42kWh models can be picked up for £10,700.

Honda E

The Honda E has one of the most distinctive exterior designs of any modern car.

With its cutesy circular headlights, camera door mirrors and bubble-shape proportions, the E is one of the best-looking compact EVs on the market.

Inside is just as mad as its exterior with four screens that run the width of the dashboard, while all models come with lots of standard equipment.

All Es come fitted with a 36kWh battery pack with a single electric motor, that can deliver up to a claimed 137 miles between trips to the plug.

Second-hand values are also tempting, with low-mileage cars up for around £12,500, and flagship Advance models can be picked up from £14,000.

Hyundai Kona Electric

The Kona Electric is a compact crossover that is a great all-rounder, thanks to its decent electric range and smooth driving experience.

It’s available with a choice of 39kWh and 64kWh battery packs, while all models come packed full of equipment and provide lots of interior space.

Out on the road, the Kona Electric is all about getting you to your destination in a smooth, comfortable and effortless manner, while the cabin feels modern thanks to its use of light fabrics and upholsteries.

Used Kona Electrics are on the second-hand market from £10,400 for a 39kWh example, and 64kWh models can be purchased for £13,300.

Kia Soul EV

The Soul EV really does what it says on the tin, by offering lots of character with its funky exterior design and spacious cabin.

The Soul EV is equipped with a 64kWh battery pack with a single electric motor that provides a claimed range of up to 280 miles on a single charge.

Thanks to the car’s boxy design, there is plenty of space inside for adults, and the car packs a decent luggage capacity of 315 litres.

Looking on the second-hand market, a low-mileage example starts at just over £14,000.

Mini Electric

The Mini Electric is a fun and fresh compact EV that comes with bucket loads of character.

To many, the Mini Electric looks like a petrol-powered model, with the only difference being the smoothed-off front end and ‘E’ badges, to disguise it from its combustion sibling.

Underneath, the Mini Electric is equipped with a 32.6kWh battery pack and an electric motor to deliver a claimed range of up to 144 miles between charges.

To drive, this electric model retains the Mini’s ‘go-kart’ handling, despite its extra 145kg weight, while the car feels spritely and eager, making it great fun on a twisty road.

Prices on the used market are affordable, with a top-spec SE model on the market for just £11,295 with 35,000 miles on the clock.

Nissan Leaf

When it comes to electric vehicles, the Nissan Leaf is probably the car that springs to your mind.

The Leaf kickstarted the mass-market EV trend when the original car went on sale in 2011, and now, this market has never been quite so competitive.

The second-generation Leaf features more advanced battery technology, and an updated interior and exterior design, plus it’s available with 40kWh and 59kWh battery packs.

The Leaf provides a smooth and comfortable driving experience, while all models come with lots of toys for the money.

The Peugeot E-208 is a good-looking and efficient EV that needs no introduction.

When it comes to compact EVs, the Renault Zoe was one of the first in this segment, when it first launched in 2013.

The latest Zoe is equipped with a 52kWh battery pack and a single electric motor to produce a total of 136bhp and can deliver a claimed electric range of 239 miles.

The Zoe is easy to drive, cheap to run and comes with unique looks, which still look fresh, despite the car’s age.

Second-hand examples are very cheap, with a four-year-old car that’s covered 29,000 miles priced at £9,900.

Volkswagen e-Up!

The Volkswagen e-Up! is an affordable, cutesy and easy-to-live EV that is perfect for driving around town.

The e-Up! comes as standard with five doors and a 36.8kWh battery pack, which can take the car a claimed 159 miles between trips to the plug.

The e-Up! is also more than practical enough for city driving, with its tight turning circle, small dimensions and great visibility, makes it the perfect city companion.
