Estate cars are a great alternative to the likes of SUVs, as they offer a lot more for a lot less.

The estate car has been overlooked in recent years, due to the rising popularity of SUVs, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a wide range of models available on the second-hand market.

They offer lots of interior space and some of the largest boot capacities of any cars on the road, while the models on this list provide excellent driving experiences, lots of standard equipment and are all available through Cazoo.

So, if you’re in the market for a second-hand estate, what are the best models? Here is our guide to the best used family wagons you can buy today.

Toyota Corolla Touring Sports

If you want to go down the hybrid route, then the Toyota Corolla Touring Sports is your best bet.

It’s available with a choice of a 1.8-litre petrol engine mated to an electric motor or a more powerful 2.0-litre petrol with an electric motor, with both powertrains offering a claimed fuel consumption figure of more than 60mpg.

The Corolla is good to drive, has an impressive amount of standard equipment and packs a 596-litre boot capacity.

Second-hand examples start at £16,500 for a three-year-old model with the 1.8-litre unit and has covered less than 50,000 miles, or £18,000 for a 2.0-litre car.

Skoda Octavia Estate

The Skoda Octavia Estate is one of best family estates on the market, and for good reason.

It’s efficient, frugal, restrained and comfortable on a long journey, while the interior space is impressive and the car packs a 640-litre boot capacity.

The car also features lots of handy cubby holes around the cabin and there is even the option of a plug-in hybrid variant that can do a claimed 41 miles on electric power.

If you want more performance, then Skoda has you covered with the vRS model, which comes equipped with a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine that develops 241bhp.

Second-hand examples are affordable too, with a 2023 car covering less than 40,000 miles on the clock for £15,600. A plug-in hybrid example will set you back around £17,000 and a vRS will cost you £24,350.

BMW 3 Series Touring

If you enjoy driving and need to carry your family around, then how about the BMW 3 Series Touring?

The 3 Series is one the best cars to drive in its class with a rear-wheel drive setup, precise handling and decent performance.

The interior feels premium and all models come with plenty of equipment. There is a choice of frugal, petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrains, while the car provides a decent boot capacity of 500 litres.

Second-hand cars are priced from £24,000 for a plug-in hybrid example in M Sport trim, or £31,000 for a diesel.

Grey Skoda Superb Estate

Skoda Superb Estate

By far and away, one of the best estate cars goes to the Skoda Superb Estate.

Why? It’s because of the sheer amount of space on offer, packing a 625-litre boot capacity that will swallow a family of four's luggage with ease, there is a cavernous amount of interior space with storage scattered all over, and the Superb is a great long-distance cruiser.

This makes it the ideal family car that will last a lifetime, and with a range of petrol and diesel engines on offer, what’s not to like?

You’ll pay around £16,700 for a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol-engined car with less than 40,000 miles on the odometer, or £22,000 for a 2.0-litre diesel.

BMW 5 Series Touring

The 3 Series Touring’s big brother, the 5 Series Touring, still offers the same impressive driving experience with even more space.

The 5 Series Touring packs a 570-litre boot capacity, with flat folding rear seats and an interior that can fit all of your family in with ease.

There’s a choice of petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrains, as well as rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive setups.

If you need a car that entertains you on a back road, while still being a sensible family workhorse, then the 5 Series Touring is a great choice.

Expect to pay around £25,000 for a low mileage plug-in hybrid car, or if you cover lots of miles and need a diesel, then prices start from £27,500.

Mercedes C-Class Estate

If you want a car that will be luxurious on long trips, has one of the best interiors and comes with a prestigious badge, then the Mercedes C-Class Estate could be what you’re looking for.

The C-Class is a direct rival to the BMW 3 Series but comes with more standard equipment, has a better ride quality and feels more premium inside.

Just because it focuses on luxury, it doesn’t mean that practicality has been forgotten about, as the C-Class Estate has plenty of room inside the cabin for a family, while the boot capacity stands at 490 litres.

There is also a range of petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrains on offer, and this Mercedes should hold its residual values well come resale time.

In terms of used prices, three-year-old examples with low mileage can be yours for £24,800. However, if you want a plug-in hybrid car, you’ll have to stretch to £32,000.

Seat Leon Estate

If you want a family estate car, but find the Volkswagen Golf a little bit bland, then you have its stylish Spanish cousin, the Seat Leon Estate.

Underneath its skin, you’ll find the same mechanicals, platform and chassis found in the Golf, but is wrapped up in a much more aggressive-looking package.

The Leon is good to drive, has a well-screwed together cabin and offers plenty of space inside, packing a 620-litre boot capacity.

Prices are reasonable too, with a 2023 car on the market for £16,500 in sporty ‘FR’ trim.

The Outback features a raised ride height, a comfortable interior and a rough and ready look to make it fit in any environment.

Under the bonnet, there is a 2.5-litre petrol engine that produces 166bhp and 252Nm of torque, while the car’s all-wheel drive system provides lots of traction and makes it the ideal mud-plugging workhorse if you live in rural areas.

Second-hand prices start at £25,850 for a 2023 ‘Touring’ model with less than 35,000 miles on the clock.
