There’s no doubt about it, SUVs are the most popular type of vehicles on the roads of Britain.

This is because they provide jacked-up driving positions, lots of interior space, decent levels of standard equipment and are available with several powertrain options.

But, if you’re in the market for one, and need that little bit of extra off-road capability, did you know that there are lots of models on the second-hand market that come with four-wheel drive, and are all available through Cazoo?

Well, if you’re after an SUV with four-wheel drive, which ones are the best on the market?

Here is our guide to the best used 4x4 SUVs that you can buy today.

Audi Q7

If you have an expanding family and are looking at a premium SUV, then the Audi Q7 is a good shout.

It comes with seven seats as standard, a plush-feeling interior cabin, lots of standard equipment and benefits from Audi’s ‘Quattro’ all-wheel drive system.

Thanks to the car’s boxy design, rear-seat space shouldn’t be an issue for passengers and all models come loaded with equipment.

Expect to pay around £31,000 for a 2020 car which has covered 45,000 miles, or £40,000 for a sportier ‘S Line’ model.

Blue Volvo XC90

Volvo XC90

Another seven-seater on this list is the Volvo XC90, which is all about comfort and safety.

The current model has been around since 2015, but that doesn’t mean it’s out of date, because the XC90 still has a lot to offer.

The third row of chairs can accommodate adults for short trips, there are lots of standard safety features, and this big Volvo is very comfortable to cruise up and down the motorway in, thanks to its excellent levels of refinement and soft suspension.

It’s not the most dynamic car on this list when it comes to driving dynamics, but overall, the XC90 is still one of the key players in the premium family SUV market, and with its standard all-wheel drive system, it makes it easier to travel on the rough stuff if you have to.

Look to spend around £30,000 for a five-year-old hybrid example that has covered around 45,000 miles.

Skoda Kodiaq

One of the best family wagons to beat is the Skoda Kodiaq, due to its excellent all-round capability.

The Kodiaq was the first seven-seat Skoda when it went on sale in 2017, and is available with a handy four-wheel drive system for added traction.

It comes with acres of interior space, while the third row of seats are acceptable for children and bearable enough for adults on short trips. There are also lots of handy cubby holes dotted about the cabin and there is a choice of frugal petrol and diesel engines.

The Kodiaq is also good to drive too, although not the most engaging, but its quiet cabin, supple suspension and light steering make long journeys a breeze.

Used prices are very tempting, with a 2021 car that’s covered 47,000 miles and has the all-important four-wheel drive system on the market for just £20,500, which represents excellent value for money.

Blue Suzuki Jimny

Suzuki Jimny

In 2018, Suzuki made a great impression in reinventing the ageing Jimny compact 4x4 and turned it into one of the most highly desirable packages on the market.

The Jimny features a retro-styled design, which makes it look like a miniaturised Mercedes G-Class, a hard-wearing interior and permanent four-wheel drive, to make this the ultimate mini off-roader.

As it’s a Suzuki, it comes with dependability and reliability as standard, and the flagship ‘SZ5’ model comes with all the bells and whistles you could ever need.

Second-hand prices are strong, with 2020 cars on the market for as much as £22,500 with nearly 50,000 miles on the clock, which demonstrates there’s still huge demand for these plucky little cars.

Dacia Duster

If you want something that is all about value for money, then you can’t go wrong with the Dacia Duster.

The Duster is one of Britain’s cheapest SUVs and it also comes with the option of a four-wheel drive system.

The Duster packs an impressive amount of interior space and a decent boot capacity of 411 litres.

If you avoid the entry-level trim, all models come with a decent amount of standard equipment and the Duster is available with a choice of petrol, diesel and even a ‘Bi-Fuel’ LPG option.

Second-hand prices are what make the Duster a very tempting package, with 2021 cars on the market with four-wheel drive, priced at £12,300.

Toyota Land Cruiser

If you need a vehicle that is reliable, dependable, durable, and will last a lifetime, then the Toyota Land Cruiser is a no-brainer.

The Land Cruiser comes equipped with permanent four-wheel drive, chunky off-road tyres, a low-range gearbox and a bulletproof 2.8-litre turbocharged diesel engine.

All models come with plenty of standard equipment and all Land Cruisers come with Toyota’s 10-year Relax Warranty scheme, which will add one year or 10,000 miles worth of warranty to the car, every time it’s serviced at a Toyota dealer until it’s 10 years old.

The Land Cruiser is also available with seven seats, there is lots of interior space and the Japanese firm claims that this big family wagon can achieve a combined 30mpg.

Looking at the used market, you can pick up a clean 2021 Land Cruiser for around £40,000 with less than 30,000 miles on the clock.

Fiat Panda Cross

It might be small, but it’s got a big heart. The Fiat Panda Cross is one of the most underrated four-wheel drive mud pluggers around.

The Panda is a cute and quirky small car that makes for a great rough and ready off-roader as the Cross version comes with a higher ground clearance, chunky roof bars, skid plates and uprated suspension.

Also, its tiny 0.9-litre two-cylinder Twinair engine may not make it the fastest car in the world, but with a claimed 57.6mpg, it proves to be pretty frugal.

If you want more power, then there is a more sophisticated 1.2-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that returns a claimed 48.7mpg.

Prices are very affordable, with second-hand examples on the market for £10,995 for a 1.2-litre model with less than 10,000 miles on the clock, or £14,000 for a version with the 0.9-litre Twinair engine.

BMW X3

The BMW X3 is one of the best premium SUVs that also benefits from four-wheel drive.

The X3 is not only good to drive, but it’s practical too. It offers a total boot capacity of 550 litres, or 1,600 litres with the 40:20:40 split folding rear seats pushed down and there is loads of space for rear-seat occupants.

The interior quality is also very premium-feeling and there are several petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid engines available to suit a wide range of buyers.

Look to spend around £22,000 for a low-mileage plug-in hybrid model, or £25,500 for a sportier M Sport car.
