To help you find the right used electric car for you and your family, we’ve rounded up our top 10 electric family cars, taking into consideration key features such as value for money, space, comfort and battery range. Here (in no particular order) are the best used electric family cars you can buy.

1. Volkswagen ID.3

The Volkswagen ID.3 hatchback is a successor to the e-Golf, itself still a worthy family EV. But the ID.3 adds better range, lots of room on the inside and a spacious boot. It’s also excellent to drive, balancing a sprightly feel with driver and passenger comfort. A choice of batteries can give you a range of up to 336 miles on a single charge.

2. Hyundai Kona Electric

The Hyundai Kona is a very good car in all its forms, which include petrol, diesel and hybrid, but it’s the electric model – called Kona Electric – that really stands out. It has distinctive looks and comes very well-equipped. It’s a practical family car (as long as you don’t have more than two children), the interior tech is really easy to use, and it feels responsive to drive.

A five-year factory warranty is better than those found on a lot of rivals, and that means many secondhand examples will still be covered. Two battery choices are available, with electric ranges of either 180 or 281 miles.

3. Audi E-tron

The Audi E-tron is a great family SUV if you’re after something at the premium end of the market. It has a high-quality, high-tech interior and is very comfortable for the driver and passengers, with enough space in the back for three adults. A full battery charge will get you around 250 miles or range, which should be more than enough for everyday use.

4. Kia e-Niro

The Kia e-Niro is one of the best – and most popular – electric family cars around. It’s roomy inside but compact enough to be easy to park, well-equipped and excellent value for money.

You get lots of features included as standard and, like every Kia, it comes with a  seven-year warranty from new, which means most used cars will still be covered.

You can get a Niro as a hybrid, but the full-electric model (known as the e-Niro) has a bigger boot and will also take you and your family up to 280 miles on a single battery charge, according to official figures. We’re looking at the first-generation Niro here, sold new until 2022. A new, sleeker version was released that same year, but there are fewer of them available used.

5. MG ZS EV

The MG ZS EV is a small SUV from a brand once known for classic British sports cars but which is fast becoming synonymous with affordable family-friendly electric cars. It costs remarkably little compared to petrol-powered rivals, let alone pure-electric models, and although some are more luxurious and better to drive, the ZS EV does all the basics well and is roomy and comfortable inside.

Maximum official battery for pre-2021 models is 163 miles, while post-2021 models have a range of either 163 miles or 273 miles depending on whether you go for the standard or long-range model.

6. MG5 EV

The MG5 EV (introduced in 2020) is currently the only electric estate car you can buy, and it provides a unique blend of practicality and affordability. As you'd expect of an estate car it’s got a large, well-shaped boot that will swallow up the bits and bobs that come with family life without a fuss.

It’s comfortable to travel in, with a simple dashboard and big windows that give everyone a great view out. The maximum official battery range is 213 for older versions and 250 miles for the latest versions. All are incredibly cost-effective, costing much the same as a rival car with a petrol or diesel engine, and when buying used you get the benefit of what’s left of the seven-year manufacturer warranty the MG5 comes with when new.

7. Nissan Leaf

The Nissan Leaf was the first family electric car in the UK and, even after all this time, it’s still one of the best. Older Leafs, made from 2011 to 2018, are very affordable and have lots of space inside considering their size, which makes them great value for money.

The newer model (pictured), sold new from 2018, builds on that, with even more space for passengers, a more premium interior and a longer battery range. The newer model will manage up to 239 miles on a single battery charge, according to official figures, while the previous model can give you up to 155 miles.

8. Tesla Model 3

The Tesla Model 3 is the smallest car that Tesla makes, but it’s impressively spacious and it’s a very popular family car. It’s one of the best used electric cars (and not just in the family category), with plenty of used examples available and lots of choice.

All models are packed with features, and give you a longer battery range than just about any other similar car – most will cover more than 300 miles on a full charge, according to official figures.

9. Skoda Enyaq iV

The Skoda Enyaq iV majors on space and clever features to make family life that bit easier. Several versions are available, with an official battery range of up to 338 miles. This gives you options for different budgets, but all versions share the same benefits – an electric car that’s a brilliant all-rounder, with lots of space inside and a really large boot.

The ENyaq is good to drive, too, and it has lots of storage areas inside for various family odds and ends, as well as useful features like an ice scraper in the boot lid that also serves as a tyre tread depth gauge.

10. Mercedes-Benz EQC

The Mercedes-Benz EQC is probably the best all-rounder among the company’s electric SUVs. Not too big and not too small, it’s a luxury family car that’s supremely comfortable to drive and is packed with safety features to keep everyone protected.

It looks smart inside and out and comes with a wealth of high-tech features as standard. The back seats are roomy and while the boot isn’t as big as you find in some rivals, it’s still more than capable of carrying luggage for a family holiday. A full battery charge will take you up to 255 miles.
