Need lots of space in your next car, but don’t want to spend too much money? Then you need an affordable seven-seater. Although seven-seat cars tend to cost more than five-seat cars, there are lots of used seven-seaters that are relatively cheap to buy.
Here’s our roundup of the top 10 affordable seven-seater cars, most of which are available for less than £15,000.
The Land Rover Discovery Sport is a stylish SUV that has a premium look and feel and seating for up to seven. It was introduced in 2014, so there are plenty to choose from and it’s a much more affordable option than you might think.
Most versions have four-wheel drive and you’ll find lots with an automatic gearbox. As with any Land Rover, the Discovery Sport has genuine off-road ability yet it’s quiet and comfortable on the road. The interior has a rugged yet classy look and the two rear seats fold away in seconds if you need more boot space.

Another impressively stylish MPV is the Ford Grand C-Max. This seven-seat version of the five-seat C-Max is a very comfortable car that’s perfect for long family road trips and it’s very well-equipped for the money.
Sold new between 2011 and 2019, the Grand C-Max is now excellent value as a used buy. The interior gives you loads of space and a third row of seats that folds flat if you need to carry large objects. Its sliding side doors make it really easy to get kids and child seats in and out, especially in tight parking spaces.
If you thought you couldn’t afford a modern seven-seat SUV, the Nissan X-Trail may just prove you wrong. It’s essentially a slightly larger, seven-seat version of the hugely popular Nissan Qashqai, using many of the same parts and with an almost identical dashboard.
As with the Qashqai, it’s excellent value for money and most models are well-equipped, with lots of high-tech features. Many have a reversing camera and some even have additional cameras that give you a bird’s-eye, 360-degree view of the entire car that makes it easy to manoeuvre in or out of a parking space.
The Ford S-Max proves that a large, spacious MPV can be fun to drive. It has a surprisingly sporty feel on the road, yet it also provides the comfort you want from a family seven-seater.
There are petrol models with impressive performance, although fuel efficiency isn’t their strong point; if you’re trying to keep costs down, it’s best to go for one with a diesel engine. There’s a wide range of trims to choose from and every version has an interior with lots of flexibility, with individual back seats that fold down to give you extra boot space when you need it.
Don’t get confused by the name – the Citroen Grand C4 Picasso and Grand C4 SpaceTourer are one and the same: it’s just that Citroen changed the name in 2018. It means that cars labelled Picasso are older, which generally means more affordable, although you can still pick up a newer Grand C4 SpaceTourer for less than £15,000.
Whatever the name, this is a very practical choice for a larger family, giving you a huge interior, a very comfortable ride and lots of storage space. And in a sea of boxy, uninspiring MPVs, it’s also refreshingly stylish. A choice of efficient petrol and diesel engines helps to keep running costs down.

Sold new between 2016 and 2022, the Renault Grand Scenic is another spacious MPV that’s an excellent used buy for large families. Its curvy lines make it rather stylish for an MPV and it’s comfortable to drive.
You get loads of space inside and lots of storage, although, as with a lot of seven-seaters, the rear-most seats are best reserved for small children. Both diesel and petrol versions are available with a choice of manual or automatic gearboxes.
A superb all-rounder, the Skoda Kodiaq is one of the best used family SUVs that you can buy.
With a range of strong petrol and diesel engines, a choice of two- or four-wheel drive and lots of space across three rows of seats, it has everything covered. It’s also packed with clever features to make life easier, including umbrellas stored in the doors and an ice scraper with a tyre-depth gauge stored in the fuel filler flap. The Kodiaq is a bit more expensive than some of the other cars on this list, but it’s a modern, hugely practical SUV that’s exceptional value for money.
When it comes to space-per-pound, the Vauxhall Zafira Tourer is hard to beat. It’s a large, seven-seat MPV that was very competitively priced when sold new between 2012 and 2018 and it looks even more like a bargain now.
It’s comfortable on long journeys or around town, and the diesel engines particularly will give you good performance and really good fuel economy. The Zafira Tourer’s party trick is its flexible seating layout, which lets you slide the middle row forward or backwards to give more legroom to those in the third row. The back of the second-row middle seat can be folded down to make a table for the kids, so it’s great for your long family road trips.
A large and versatile MPV with a classy, understated vibe, the Volkswagen Sharan gives you acres of space and lots of features for extra practicality.
Sliding side doors make it simple to get kids in and out of the back in tight parking spaces, and all the seats (except the driver’s) fold flat if you need to carry lots of stuff. The Sharan is relaxing to drive and its large windows mean that everyone on board gets a great view out. All versions are well-equipped and have interiors with a more premium feel than you get in many large MPVs.
If a Sharan is slightly too large for your needs, then check out the Volkswagen Touran. It’s smaller but will still carry a group of seven in comfort, with a well thought-out, practical layout and a high-quality interior. It comes with some very efficient engines, too, which will help to keep running costs down.
Volkswagens tend to hold their value fairly well, so it might not be the cheapest option to buy, but this is another car that has been sold for a number of years, so you have lots to choose from in a range of prices.
