This lot will be auctioned via Iconic Auctioneers, Online Auction - 11th September on Thursday the 11th of September. , Background:The Fiat X1/9 is a true slice of Italian automotive flair, a compact mid-engined sports car that combined Bertone’s design genius with Fiat’s mechanical expertise. Built between 1972 and 1982 by Fiat and from 1982 to 1989 by Gruppo Bertone, the X1/9 offered drivers a taste of exotic engineering in an accessible package. At its heart was a transverse engine and gearbox layout borrowed from the front-wheel drive Fiat 128, but reimagined with the drivetrain positioned just ahead of the rear axle. This mid-engined configuration gave the X1/9 its famously balanced handling, setting it apart from rivals of the era.The car’s distinctive styling included retractable headlights, a lightweight removable hardtop that neatly stowed under the bonnet, and dual luggage compartments at the front and rear, a rare touch of practicality for a two seat sports car. It also carried the distinction of being the first Fiat designed from the outset to meet stringent United States safety regulations, a forward looking move in the early 1970s.When Bertone took over full production in 1982, the model was rebadged as the Bertone X1/9. These later cars benefitted from subtle refinements, including revised footwells to improve legroom and overall comfort, especially for taller drivers. The Car:This wonderful little Fiat X1/9 is offered in remarkable condition and having covered just 25,508 miles from new. Delivered new to its first owner in August of 1988, this Fiat X1/9 came with its 1500cc engine, targa top and one of a limited number of ‘Bertone’ editions. Now 37 years later the car remains in excellent condition with just 5 former keepers. With such little use, the car remains in a wonderfully original condition. X1/9’s are notorious for fading away on UK roads due to rust, not a problem on this example, with all the sills, boot floor and other know areas all rust free. The only spot that can be found is in the top corner of the windscreen, roughly 1cm across. The paint remains in great condition with very few marks or blemishes throughout the car. While other exterior aspects of the car also remain in excellent condition, with the alloys and bumpers corrosion free and looking almost new.On the interior it could be argued that it is in even better condition than the exterior, with almost no signs of use on any of the high traffic areas, including the seat bolsters, fabric seat inserts and steering wheel. All the switch gear retains their clear white symbols, and all the electrics work as intended.Maintenance wise the car comes with plenty of paperwork. Especially for lots of little interior parts, servicing and other small engine parts, evidence the cars been greatly loved and maintained regardless of its use and milage. If you’re looking for one of Italy’s best kept secrets, this little Fiat X1/9 would be a perfect car to use across our British B roads.Location: KentSeller: PrivatePhotography: Professional
