The style of the car
The Audi A6 is available as a four-door saloon or as a five-door estate, called the A6 Avant. There’s a rugged-looking version of the estate called the Allroad that has raised suspension and some SUV-style upgrades on the exterior, as well as an extremely powerful performance model called the RS6. The Avant is one of the best premium estate cars you can buy.
How it drives
The A6 is a good car to drive. It has precise steering, which inspires confidence at speed, and its smooth petrol and diesel engines are quiet and powerful. Audi is famous for its ‘quattro’ four-wheel drive system, which is available on most versions of the A6. This option gives drivers extra reassurance in slippery conditions. It’s a large car to manoeuvre and park but most versions come with parking sensors and cameras.
The interior
The five-seat, four-door A6 saloon is a comfortable and well-finished car with a large boot and plenty of leg and head room. The five-door A6 Avant, the estate, is much more versatile, offering one of the largest boots in its category. All versions come well equipped, and Audi’s class-leading infotainment system is intuitive and fun to use. The 4x4 Allroad version of the estate is a great all-rounder.
Running costs and reliability
The Audi A6 holds its value as a used car and it costs much the same as rival BMW and Mercedes-Benz models. All the engines are efficient, but the diesel ones, in particular, are particularly impressive in terms of fuel economy and low tax bills. Insurance and maintenance costs are likely to be higher for an Audi A6 than a Skoda Superb, for example, but the car is considered to be fairly reliable. It has a five-star Euro NCAP score.
How the Audi A6 compares with similar cars
The Audi A6 is what’s commonly known as an ‘executive’ car. It competes with the Mercedes E-Class and the BMW 5-Series, though you might also consider the cheaper Skoda Superb. It’s bigger than the Audi A4 and smaller than the A8. It consistently wins awards for its design and all-round appeal.
