As Cazoo is changing the way people buy used cars, we wanted to find out more about the UK's attitude towards used car buying. So we ran a survey with YouGov where we asked over 2,000 UK residents for their thoughts on the used car market.

Men and women both agreed that price, age and mileage are the most important factor when deciding on their next used car. However, women are more concerned about safety, while men are more interested in in-car technology.
The biggest concerns people have when purchasing a used car are issues with the gearbox, closely followed by faulty electrics and clutch problems.

It’s all about price for potential car buyers. 76% of people believe that the cost of the car is the most important factor, while only 39% say that test driving the car is.

Over a third of people (36%) find buying a car stressful, with unexpected problems and a lack of knowledge about cars causing the most worry.

Londoners find buying a used car the most stressful (48%) as opposed to people in the North West and East Midlands with only 37% of used car buyers finding the process stressful.
74% of people say that used cars being less expensive than new cars are the biggest attraction when buying second-hand. This is closely followed by depreciation costs (52%), cheaper insurance (23%) and environmental factors (8%), as manufacturing a new car has significant environmental costs.

When it comes to the quality of used cars, a very high proportion of Brits (81%) find them trustworthy and reliable, with only 19% finding them unreliable.

Many parts of the UK find used cars trustworthy, but drivers from the South West (89%) come out on top and find them the most reliable. However, people from Yorkshire and Humber (72%) find them the least reliable.
Londoners are the most open to purchasing an electric car, with 40% of people who live in the capital saying that their next car could be an electric one.

Methodology
All figures, unless otherwise stated, are from YouGov Plc. The total sample size was 2087 adults of which 1,468 own a car. Fieldwork was undertaken between 10th - 11th December 2019. The survey was carried out online. The figures have been weighted and are representative of all UK adults (aged 18+).
