Thinking of getting a Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross?
The style of the car
The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is one of the most distinctive-looking mid-size SUVs. It combines the rugged, high-riding stance of an SUV with the sloping roofline of a coupe and an unusual two-part back window. The interior has a more conventional look, but that just means it’s very user-friendly.
How it drives
The Eclipse Cross feels smooth and responsive to drive. It’s quiet and comfortable enough that long motorway journeys can be stress-free, too. It’s more compact than it looks so driving around town is easy. But the view out of the two-part back window takes a bit of getting used to when manoeuvring. Just one petrol engine is available, which gives good acceleration. Some models have an automatic gearbox and four-wheel drive.
The interior
The Eclipse Cross is a mid-size SUV with five doors and five seats. It’s about the same size as the Nissan Qashqai or Seat Ateca. There’s plenty of room for four average-size adults, so it’ll work well as a family car. The sloping roof means taller people might find headroom a little tight in the back seats, especially in models with a sunroof. There are rival cars with bigger boots, but the Eclipse Cross still has space for three large suitcases. The dashboard is user-friendly and the whole interior feels sturdy. All models come with air con, smartphone connectivity, cruise control and a rear parking camera.
Running costs
The Eclipse Cross is only available with a turbocharged petrol engine that gives a fuel economy of 42.8mpg, according to official figures. That shrinks slightly in models with an automatic gearbox and four-wheel drive. Road tax and insurance costs are relatively low. Safety experts Euro NCAP awarded the Eclipse Cross a full five-star rating as it comes with a lot of driver safety systems as standard.
How it compares with similar cars
There are many other mid-size SUVs to choose from, including the Skoda Karoq and Vauxhall Grandland X. But the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross stands out from the crowd, rates highly on safety and offers good value for money.
Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross common questions
Mitsubishi has an established reputation for building durable, reliable cars and the Eclipse Cross is living up to that.
There’s only one engine available in the Eclipse Cross, a turbocharged petrol unit. It gives a fuel economy of around 40mpg, according to official figures. Road tax and insurance costs are quite low.
The Eclipse Cross has enough interior and boot space to meet most family’s needs.
There are more spacious and fuel-efficient mid-size SUVs, but few look as distinctive as the Eclipse Cross, or offer as good a value.
