The terms ‘4x4’ and ‘SUV’ are interchangeable. They refer to a type of car that rides high off the ground and can – in theory at least - be driven over rough, off-road terrain. SUV has been the preferred term for such cars for many years. Although 4x4 also means four-wheel-drive, not all Mitsubishi SUVs are actually available with four-wheel drive.

High-spec versions of the ASX and Eclipse Cross SUVs are available with four-wheel drive. Check the specifications of the car you’re interested in to make sure it’s there. The bigger Outlander and utilitarian Shogun Sport are only available with four-wheel drive.
Mitsubishi’s 4x4 models are really practical family cars. The Shogun Sport has seven seats and is just as capable driving off-road as a Land Rover. For most people, the main benefit of a 4x4 is that they feel more secure in wet, muddy or icy conditions than a front or rear-wheel drive car and they’re better for towing.
Apart from the extremely efficient Outlander plug-in hybrid, Mitsubishi 4x4s aren’t the most cost-effective to run as they use more fuel than some similar cars from other brands. But they come very well equipped and are built to last a long time, so they can end up being pretty good value.
