Ford Fiesta buying guide
Why buy the Ford Fiesta?
The Ford Fiesta is among the very best small hatchbacks. It’s not the most practical car of this type, but it’s great value, feels fantastic to drive on any type of road and there is a huge range of models available, which means you should be able to find one to fit your needs and budget.
Ford Fiesta range and updates
The current Ford Fiesta model has been sold new since 2017 and was updated in 2022 with new styling – most noticeably for the front grille and headlights – among other changes. The latest car also has a different interior with more modern tech. In both versions, you have a huge number of models to choose from, so you should be able to find a Fiesta that suits you.
There are three-door or five-door versions, petrol or diesel engines, and manual or automatic gearboxes. There’s also a wide range of trims to choose from – the sporty-looking ST-Line and upmarket Titanium are the most popular. There’s even a luxury model – the Vignale – as well as the SUV-like Active and the ST hot hatch.
The previous Fiesta model was sold new from 2008 to 2017 – it looks very similar to the current car and is also great to drive but, as you’d expect, it doesn’t offer some of the high-tech features you get with the latest model.
Ford Fiesta tech and features
In many models of Fiesta, you’ll find features such as air con, cruise control, DAB radio, Bluetooth and electric windows. Some high-spec models have features such as sat nav, a digital drivers display in place of traditional dials, heated synthetic-leather seats and a sunroof. Many newer models also have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.
If you’d like to know what features are in the Fiesta that interest you on the Cazoo website, open the listing page for that car, and scroll down to the features section.
Ford Fiesta running costs and value
Every Fiesta is really fuel efficient – even the high-performance ST model. All the petrol Fiestas can give you an average fuel economy of at least 40mpg, and even more than 60mpg in some cases, according to official figures. Diesel models can give at least 54mpg, up to as much as 88mpg. CO2 emissions are correspondingly low, so Vehicle Excise Duty (car tax) is very affordable, or even free. The Fiesta is also very cost-effective to buy and service.
Ford Fiesta vs rivals
There are many other small hatchbacks like the Fiesta including the Renault Clio, Peugeot 208 and Skoda Fabia. The Ford isn’t quite as spacious as the Renault or the Skoda, and some would say not as stylish as the Peugeot. But the Fiesta feels much better to drive than any of its rivals. It’s great value and there are so many different models that it’s very easy to find the one that’s right for you.
Common questions about the Ford Fiesta
There’s a generous amount of space in the front of the Fiesta but the seats are mounted quite high, so if you’re much over six feet tall your headroom may be a bit tight. Two adults will be reasonably comfortable sitting in the back seat for shorter journeys. Most children will be fine for space, but some may struggle to see out of the relatively small back windows. Also bear in mind that access to the back seats of three-door models can be tricky because passengers have to clamber in behind the front seats. In the boot, there’s space for a family’s weekly food shopping or a couple’s luggage for a week away. The back seats fold down if you need to carry anything bulky.
Safety organisation Euro NCAP awarded both the latest and previous versions of the Fiesta its full five-star rating. Standard safety features include at least nine airbags, anti-lock brakes, stability control and traction control. Some models also have advanced driver assistance systems including automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning and lane-departure warning.
The Fiesta is the second-smallest car that Ford makes, after the entry-level Ka+. Ford hatchbacks bigger than the Fiesta include the mid-size Focus and large Mondeo. The EcoSport and Puma SUVs, and the B-Max MPV, are all similar to the Fiesta in terms of length and width.
The latest Fiesta is available with mild-hybrid power – a petrol engine combined with an extra electrical system that helps improve fuel economy and reduce CO2 emissions. But, unlike a full hybrid or plug-in hybrid, a mild-hybrid can’t be driven on zero-emissions electric power alone.
