The style of the car
The DS 3 Cabrio is a small, two-door convertible. It’s a very stylish car, with lots of interesting details, like the ‘shark fin’ behind the doors. In most convertibles, the whole roof lowers and raises. The DS 3 is different in that only the fabric centre section of the roof and the back window lower and raise. The interior is more sheltered than in other convertibles as a result and you can raise or lower the roof (electrically) while you’re driving, below motorway speeds. There are a lot of colours to choose from.
How it drives
The DS 3 is small and light, so it’s good fun on a country road. It’s quiet, comfortable and feels solid on the road, even on long journeys. Petrol and diesel engines are available, all of which give adequate acceleration. The top-of-the range Performance model is very fast for a small car. All engines come with a manual gearbox as standard; an automatic is available with the PureTech 110 petrol engine, but it’s quite rare. The DS 3’s small size, light steering and easy gear change make it easy to drive. The view out’s great, so parking is easy. Some models have parking sensors and a rear-view camera to help.
The interior
The DS 3 Cabrio is a small convertible with two doors and five seats. The front seats have a lot of space, even for very tall people. The back seats, though, are really only suitable for children for long journeys. Adults will just about fit, but there isn’t much legroom. Still, open the roof, and it feels much more spacious. The DS 3 has a big boot for this type of car, with enough room for a couple of medium suitcases. The boot opening is quite small, though, which could make loading bulky items tricky. The interior looks good and feels upmarket. All models get DAB radio, air con, Bluetooth and cruise control. Higher spec models get more luxurious seat upholstery, sat nav, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There have been many special edition models, with extra equipment and identifying styling details.
Running costs and reliability
The DS 3 Cabrio is competitively priced against its rivals. Yet it’s better equipped and feels more luxurious. Diesel-powered models are extremely economical, giving you 78mpg to 83mpg, according to official figures. Even petrol-powered models are very efficient in that the 1.2 models return around 65mpg, according to official figures, and the powerful Performance model returns 52mpg. Road tax costs no more than £150 per year and insurance shouldn’t cost much. The DS 3 isn’t a complex car, so servicing is very affordable. It’s considered to be generally reliable and well made. It was awarded a five-star safety rating by Euro NCAP, even though driver safety aids like lane departure warning aren’t available.
How it compares with similar cars
The Fiat 500C and Mini Convertible are the DS 3 Cabrio’s main rivals. The Fiat has the same sort of roof as the DS 3, while the Mini is a ‘full’ convertible. The Mini is better to drive and the Fiat has more character. But the DS 3 is more spacious and luxurious.
