The style of the car

The BMW X5 is a large SUV with five doors and a roomy interior. It’s available with two- or four-wheel drive, the latter known as xDrive. The X-Line versions are the most luxurious while the X5M is fast enough to rival some sports cars.

How it drives

As you would expect from a BMW, the X5 is a great car to drive. It copes well with all road conditions, has a range of driving settings to suit your mood and both petrol and diesel engines deliver plenty of power. The automatic gearboxes are smooth and a range of fitted assistance systems prove useful when parking. It’s also a very popular car for towing and received a five-star review from the Tow Car Awards.

The interior

The BMW X5 is similar in size to the Volvo XC90, with five doors and space for five people. Some models have two small additional seats in the boot.  Boot space is superb with more than enough room for five large suitcases. The infotainment system is easy to use and attractive, and even entry-level models like the 25d are well equipped. Most used X5s come with lots of optional extras fitted.

Running costs and reliability

There are lots of different BMW X5 versions ensuring something to suit your needs. The cost of buying and running an X5 is comparable with rivals. Reliability is good and the X5 received the full five stars from Euro NCAP thanks in part to its electronic safety systems.

How it compares with similar cars

The X5 is a large, premium SUV. It has a better quality feel than the Range Rover Sport and is more sporty than the Volvo XC90. It’s been a regular recipient of the Business Car Large 4x4 award.
