The BMW X2 is a compact SUV with a sporty look. BMW calls it a Sports Activity Coupe: it’s higher off the ground than the 1 Series hatchback but not as tall or upright as the X1 SUV. The desirable M Sport versions have an even sportier look.
The X2 is a great car to drive, giving an experience to match its sporty looks. There are sDrive front-wheel drive and xDrive four-wheel drive models and a choice of responsive petrol and diesel engines. Both six-speed manual and eight-speed automatic gearboxes are easy to use and the compact size of the X2 makes it a pleasure to drive and park in town.
The X2 is similar in size to compact hatchbacks such as the Volkswagen Golf and BMW’s own 1 Series. The interior is about the same size, too, with five seats and plenty of legroom for five adults. Headroom is good in the front but a little tighter in the back thanks to the car’s sleek shape. The five-door layout gives good access, while the boot is larger than a conventional hatchback’s. The boot lid is electrically operated, which is handy when loading or unloading. The entry-level SE has sat nav and climate control, while Sport trim adds larger alloy wheels. M Sport models gain heated front seats and leather upholstery. Top-of-the-range M Sport X cars have a sportier look thanks to different bumpers and wheels.
Prices for the X2 are similar to those of rivals such as the Audi Q2 and Jaguar E-Pace. The petrol and diesel engines are economical with some diesel models achieving official average fuel consumption of over 60mpg. Insurance and road tax bills are very competitive. BMW’s reliability record is generally good and the X2 is a safe car, with all the latest electronic safety systems and a five-star rating from safety organisation Euro NCAP.
The X2 is a similar size to the BMW X1 SUV but it has a lower roof and more sporty design overall. It’s quite a bit smaller than BMW X3. The X2 is more fun to drive than the Audi Q2 and more spacious than the Mercedes-Benz GLA.
The BMW X2 is a stylish coupe-like SUV that looks good, is great to drive and has a well-equipped and comfortable interior.
Running costs for most BMW X2 models are quite low for a premium compact SUV thanks to its efficient engines and affordable insurance bills.
The X2 is practical, with good space for four people, a reasonably large boot and some useful storage features.
The X2 matches rivals such as the Audi Q2 and Mercedes GLA for quality and practicality and is particularly fun to drive.
