The style of the car
The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe is a beautifully designed premium four-door saloon that combines sleek coupe looks with the practicality of a large family car. Alloy wheels and chrome trim give it a classy look, while M Sport models have a special body kit and lowered ride height.
How it drives
The 6 Series Gran Coupe is great to drive. It’s a large car, but responsive steering and agile handling make it feel much smaller on the road. Quiet and powerful petrol engines deliver quick acceleration. Standard parking sensors and a smooth automatic gearbox mean it’s easy to drive and park. It’s very comfortable on long journeys, while xDrive four-wheel drive versions provide extra reassurance on slippery surfaces and are useful for towing.
The interior
The 6 Series Gran Coupe is very practical for something so sleek, although it’s not as roomy as the closely related 5 Series saloon. Passengers in the back have good legroom and headroom, but the slightly raised middle seat is best for small children or occasional use by adults. The 460-litre boot will hold three large suitcases, and you can fold the back seat backrest down to load long items. The driving position is excellent, as is the interior quality. The 6 Series Gran Coupe is lavishly equipped. Entry-level SE models have BMW’s iDrive Infotainment system, which includes a large screen, sat nav and Bluetooth, as well as leather trim. M Sport models feature sports seats and extra metallic trim.
Running costs and reliability
The 6 Series Gran Coupe is priced competitively with its premium rivals and is just as generously equipped. Given their power and performance the engines are very efficient, with the diesel an excellent choice for high-mileage drivers. Tax and insurance costs are similar to rivals. BMW has a solid reputation for reliability and the Gran Coupe feels like a high-quality product. The 6 Series Gran Coupe hasn’t been tested by Euro NCAP but it has all the advanced safety features you’d expect of a luxury car.
How it compares with similar cars
The 6 Series Gran Coupe is BMW’s largest four-door coupe. It’s based on the 6 Series two-door coupe, which in turn is based on the 5 Series executive saloon. It’s bigger than the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe and lower and sportier than the hatchback BMW 6 Series GT. The 6 Series Gran Coupe is a rival for cars such as the Audi A7 and Mercedes CLS, matching them closely for size and price.
