Thinking of buying a used BMW 1 Series?
Cazoo has a range of BMW 1 Series cars for sale. If you're thinking of buying or financing a used BMW 1 Series, we answer any questions you might have below.
The style of the car
The BMW 1 Series is a three or five-door family hatchback which stands out from rivals thanks to its sporty stance and distinctive grille. M Sport versions add further appeal with bigger alloy wheels and special badges.
How it drives
If you like driving, the BMW 1 Series is an excellent family hatchback. Its firm suspension and excellent engines means it’s good fun and feels a little like a sports car to drive. Yet it’s as quiet and comfortable as its rivals for everyday use, with petrol and diesel engines providing power and efficiency. There is a high performance M140i hatchback, plus there are also four-wheel drive versions, identified by their xDrive badges.
The interior
The three and five-door versions are surprisingly spacious inside and have a large boot. The upmarket interior looks and feels great, while all versions come well equipped. All models feature an excellent infotainment system, known as iDrive, air con and electric windows. M Sport models add chunky sports seats and a thick three-spoke steering wheel.
Running costs and reliability
The upmarket 1 Series represents a good value used car choice. A used BMW 1 Series is extremely cost-effective to run too. Both the petrols and diesels deliver some of the best economy and lowest CO2 emissions in its class, meaning low tax bills. Many are covered by BMW’s prepaid servicing package and insurance won’t be expensive. The brand is famous for its reliability and the 1 Series also received a five star Euro NCAP safety rating.
How the BMW 1 Series compares with similar cars
The BMW 1 Series is the entry point to the BMW range, slightly smaller than the 2 Series coupe and 3 Series saloon. It’s a car that appeals to owners who enjoy driving, thanks to its rear-wheel drive layout that delivers fun on twisty roads. The 1 Series has won the prestigious German Golden Steering Wheel award, while the M140i version took the What Car Hot Hatch of the Year award.
BMW 1 Series common questions
If you love driving but also need a practical family car, then the BMW 1 Series is hard to beat. It’s cost effective to buy and run and has a wide choice of engines.
Owners rated the BMW 1 Series well above average for reliability, while its tried and tested engines are used in lots of other models.
The BMW 1 Series is a premium model, but it’s affordable to run thanks to engines that are at the top of the class for fuel economy and emissions. Many 1 Series models cost less to tax than a supermini.
The five-door model leads the way for practicality, the boot is as big as a VW Golf’s, while the versatile interior has plenty of handy storage.
The BMW 1 Series is slightly smaller than its main rivals. It’s just as economical, feels upmarket and comes packed with all the kit you’ll need.
