You might expect a small convertible to be strictly a two-seater, with a back seat only suitable for carrying extra bags. But that’s not the case with the A3 Cabriolet, which has space for four adults to fit comfortably, even on a long journey. There should be no issues carrying children in the back, although getting in past the front seats can be tricky. With the roof up, the boot is big enough for a couple of big suitcases but folding it down eats up some of that space. You can still fit in long, comparatively narrow loads such as a set of skis by folding down the back seats to create an area that stretches all the way from the front seats to the boot lid.

The most recent version of the A3 Cabriolet was sold from 2014 to 2020, replacing an older version sold from 2009 to 2013. It’s part of the wider Audi A3 range that also includes hatchbacks and saloons.
There’s a wide range of petrol and diesel engines available with either a manual or automatic gearbox, all creating enough power for rapid overtaking or for getting up to motorway speeds on a slip road. Some models also have ‘Quattro’ four-wheel drive. If you like the A3 Cabriolet but want a proper high-performance car, the Audi S3 Cabriolet is for you.
There are three trim levels available – SE, Sport and S line. The S line model has a sportier look and they all come very well equipped.

According to official figures, petrol A3 Cabriolet models can give fuel economy of 44-56mpg and diesels can give 67-70mpg. Every engine produces low CO2 emissions, so Vehicle Excise Duty (car tax) costs are reasonable, as is insurance.

The A3 Cabriolet is the smaller of Audi’s two four-seater convertibles (the larger being the A5 Cabriolet – which is based on the A5 Coupe). Audi also makes a couple of two-seater convertibles – the TT Roadster sports car and R8 Spyder supercar.
Safety organisation Euro NCAP hasn’t assessed the A3 Cabriolet but it gave the A3 hatchback a full five-star rating, so the Cabriolet should protect the driver and passengers similarly well in an accident. Should the convertible turn upside down, plates pop up from behind the back seats to keep heads clear of the ground. Most models also have lots of driver safety features including automatic emergency braking.
