The ZS is remarkably spacious for a relatively compact car. You and your passengers get lots of headroom and legroom in the front and back, so taller people should be able to ride comfortably. The boot is also very big for a car of this size. You’ll get a double pushchair plus shopping in without a problem and you won’t have to worry about packing light for holidays. The back seats fold down if you need to carry anything long and bulky.

MG ZS EV buying guide
Why buy the MG ZS EV?
If you’re looking for an affordable electric family car, the MG ZS EV could be just the ticket. EV stands for Electric Vehicle, and in this case, it’s a small SUV with a spacious interior, a big boot and lots of equipment included as standard. The latest Long Range model can go up to 273 miles on a fully charged battery – much further than most other electric compact SUVs, yet it costs less than just about all of them.
MG ZS EV range and updates
The ZS EV has been sold new since 2019 and was updated in 2022 with styling tweaks at the front, more up-to-date interior tech and a bigger battery that gives you much more range.
Until 2022, a new ZS EV would give you as much as 163 miles from a fully charged battery, according to official figures, but the latest Long Range model (sold from 2022) will give you up to 273 miles before you need to plug it in. All versions have an automatic gearbox and front-wheel drive. (You can also buy a non-EV version of the ZS, which has a petrol engine.)
The latest ZS EV is available in three trim levels – SE, Trophy and Trophy Connect. The trims on older models are called Excite and Exclusive.
MG ZS EV tech and features
Standard equipment on the latest models includes a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity and sat nav. You’ll also get air con, Bluetooth, a 360-degree-view parking camera and adaptive cruise control. High-spec models will also give you heated leather seats, a panoramic glass roof and a wireless mobile phone charger. Older Excite and Exclusive models come similarly well equipped.
MG ZS EV running costs and value
The latest ZS EV Long Range can take you up to 273 miles on a fully charged battery, according to official figures. An 80% recharge using a 100kW public charging station can take around 40 minutes, or about 10.5 hours if you use a 7kW home wallbox charger.
Older ZS EV models have a battery that will take you up to 163 miles per charge. They’re compatible with the slower 50kW public chargers, but also take about 40 minutes for an 80% recharge because of their smaller capacity battery. At home, you’re looking at just 6.5 hours for a full recharge from a 7kW electric car charger.
MG ZS EV vs rivals
Other electric SUVs similar in size to the ZS EV include the Peugeot e-2008 and Hyundai Kona Electric. The MG’s interior doesn’t feel as premium nor quite as smooth to drive as those cars, but it beats them on range, practicality and value.
Common questions about the MG ZS EV
The ZS EV is the smaller of MG’s two SUV models and its only fully electric SUV. The bigger SUV is called the HS, which is available with petrol and plug-in hybrid power. The MG range also includes the MG3 small hatchback and MG5 electric estate car.
Safety organisation Euro NCAP awarded the ZS EV a full five-star rating. It comes very well equipped as standard, with electronic safety features including adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning and traffic jam assist, which can accelerate, brake and steer the car in stop-start traffic.
