You get about the same amount of space inside the Ioniq as you do in family hatchbacks such as the Ford Focus or Volkswagen Golf. You’ll find there’s lots of room in the front seats while the back seats are generous for two children, or even three for shorter journeys. The Ioniq’s low, sloping roof (which helps it cut through the air efficiently, for maximum battery range) means that headroom in the back can be tight for taller adults, though. The boot is a similar size to that of other mid-size hatchbacks, with enough space for the all pushchairs, school bags and shopping that go with family life.

Hyundai Ioniq Electric buying guide
Why buy the Hyundai Ioniq Electric?
The Hyundai Ioniq Electric is a practical mid-size hatchback that’s also one of the best-value electric cars you can get. Not only does it cost less than many similar cars, every model comes with lots of standard features. It’s good to drive, with responsive steering and suspension that gives you and your passengers a quiet, smooth ride.
Hyundai Ioniq Electric range and updates
The Hyundai Ioniq was launched in 2016 as a brand-new model. Unusually, hybrid and plug-in hybrid Ioniq models are sold alongside the Ioniq Electric, so you can choose from three different types of power. The range was updated in 2019, with the biggest change being a larger infotainment display on the dashboard. At the same time, the Ioniq Electric also got a more powerful motor and a larger battery that gives you more range. Premium and Premium SE models are available, both of which are very well equipped.
Hyundai Ioniq Electric tech and features
You get lots of standard features for your money with the Ioniq Electric. The Premium trim level includes sat nav, smartphone connectivity, climate control, cruise control, parking sensors and heated seats among a long list of standard features. On top of that, Premium SE models give you leather upholstery and an electrically adjustable driver’s seat.
Hyundai Ioniq Electric running costs and value
According to official average figures, the latest Ioniq Electric (sold since 2019) has a range of up to 193 miles on a fully charged battery. Recharging from a home electric car charger can take up to 6.5 hours, while an 80% recharge from a 100kW public charger takes just under an hour. Older Ioniq models have a range of around 160 miles and need a bit longer to charge.
Hyundai Ioniq Electric vs rivals
Other electric mid-size hatchbacks include the Nissan Leaf and Volkswagen ID.3 and there are electric SUVs of similar size such as the Kia e-Niro. In comparison, the Ioniq isn’t quite as spacious as any of these, but it offers you better value and an enjoyable driving experience.
Common questions about the Hyundai Ioniq Electric
The Ioniq Electric was Hyundai’s first pure-electric car. If you want a Hyundai EV you now also have the option of the slightly smaller Kona Electric SUV, or the larger Ioniq 5 hatchback. Compared with Hyundai’s petrol and diesel models, the Ioniq is about the same size as the i30 hatchback.
Safety organisation Euro NCAP awarded the Ioniq a full five-star rating. All models have helpful driver safety features including automatic emergency braking and lane-keeping assistance. Top spec models also have adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring.
