Volkswagen Beach Buggy 1963

This lot will be auctioned via Historics Classic and Sportscar Auctioneers at The Brooklands Velocity; Mercedes-Benz World sale on Saturday 29th November. 1600cc engineOriginally a show car having been drag raced in periodVolksrods are typically inspired by American hot rods and rat rods, with one of the main characteristics separating them from other modified Beetles being the removal of the stock fenders in order achieve an open wheel look. Some Volksrods, however, don't do this and either retain the stock fenders or opt for aftermarket fenders. As with all types of car customization, various modifications are practiced in different combinations. One popular method of conversion involves removing all body moulding, bumpers and fenders, then installing a classic Ford front axle to move the wheels forward and give the car a low, stretched look. Another popular customisation is to move the stock Volkswagen axle beam forward or reverse the trailing/torsion arms and re-work the steering linkages. While most Volksrods retain the rear mounted Volkswagen engine, some builders opt to swap in a larger engine such as a V8, often changing the layout of the car to front engine in the process. While Volksrods may be very elaborate, like any hot rod, many are built with few or no expensive parts, but handmade by a "cut, weld and drive" owner, with simple mechanical tools, welding equipment and basic parts.This rare Volksrod Mk.V I presented in metallic gold is a previous show winner and was fairly well known in buggy circles as it used to be drag raced. The black trim boasts expensive Cobra leather seats with four point harnesses and a six point roll cage. We are informed the independent rear suspension is adjustable and it boasts the larger 1600cc engine with adjustable fuel pressure regulator. With a rare right hand drive quick shifter, roller skate wheel throttle pedal, Mountney steering wheel and slot mags this example being a 1963 registered car qualifies for historic vehicle so free tax. Having been used sparingly over the last few years our vendor has decided that this and his other buggy must find a new home for the summer of 2026. We are informed the buggy is running well having been reconditioned by a specialist, the carburettors rebuilt and tuned with detailed invoices for circa £4,000 in the history.
